Thackeray, William Makepeace : The Mohogany Tree JAPANESE PAPER EDITION

Samuel E. Cassino, Boston, 1887

Very Good. Limited Edition. Scarce Japanese paper edition (limited to 100 copies) in elephant folio format, measuring about 18" x 14", with mahogany colored morocco leather spine over the publisher's decoratively lettered brown cloth. Disbound with both covers complete and present , spine is missing. Copy #34 of 100. Stiff pages mounted on stubs, with original illustrated proofs (on deckle-edged Japanses paper) mounted on about half the pages, the other pages printed with decorative text and small Victorian style vignettes. This copy is numbered 34/100. Lovely presentation of this Christmas-themed poem first published anonymously in Punch, this edition described in 1887 Publisher's Weekly as "the most striking Christmas book we have ever seen, and undoubtedly one of the most elegant works on the subject of Christmas ever printed in America". Text block is sound and oncly ocasional foxing to some of the pages. The phototype illustrations in this volume were printed by the Lewis Company in Boston. The pages are unnumbered. This book is a most impressive sermon on the vanity of earthly pleasures. The book needs rebinding and the effort would be well spent on this extraordinary production.. Illustr.: Frank T, Merrill. Book Condition: Very Good
