John Nicholson : 1968 Vietnam Photo Album Americal Battle Maps Chu Lai Attack Viet Cong Poster ++

c.1968. --A Vietnam Conflict Album-- Compiled by John Nicholson, a reporter for the Southern Cross, an Americal Division Publication (with a mailing address of APO 96374 at Chu Lai Air Base Vietnam). The Southern Cross was operated by the US Marine Corps between 1965-1970. A few of the 5" x 7" B&W photos document an attack on the base that happened on the morning of 31 January 1968. As part of the Tet Offensive, the Viet Cong attacked the base with rockets and mortars triggering an explosion in the bomb dump. MAGs 12 and 13 suffered three aircraft destroyed and 23 damaged. The album contains (43) Photographs-- most of them 5"x 7" or 8"x 10". It also contains (11) hand drawn illustrations and maps. (6) maps of well-known battles, drawn up just after the battles occurred. Also inside the album is a Vietcong propaganda poster. It mentions Qu?ng Ngãi Province with symbols for the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China. The battle maps are quite interesting. One called "The Pink Vill" may refer to the village of My Lai in South Vietnam. It was known as "Pinkville" to American soldiers. The village is now infamous for the My Lai Massacre, a horrific event that took place there on March 16, 1968. Another map titled "Task Force Barker" also seems to relate to a battle at My Lai Village. SO ~ either one of these battle maps may or may not be related to the infamous My Lai Massacre. There is a map for the "Battle of Lo Giang"-- which took place from 8-9 February 1968, when the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN)'s 2nd Division attacked the Dà N?ng Air Base as part of the Tet Offensive (T?t M?u Thân). The attack was repelled by U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Army units. There's a map for the "Thanksgiving Day Battle"-- this happened on Thanksgiving Day 1968. John Stryker "Tilt" Meyer was one of the MACV-SOG commandos who led the mission. Unbeknownst to them, however, they walked into the middle of a 30,000-strong NVA encampment. Another map shows the "Battle of Kham Duc"-- it was a major battle of the Vietnam War. The event occurred in Khâm D?c from 10-12 May 1968. Album and its contents are in very good to excellent condition throughout. Album measures 12" x 13". Propaganda poster measures 10.5" x 16" (once taped to last page, shows cellophane tape stain).. Photographic Image. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover
