Circa 1840-1850. Original chapbook, once bound, with an illustration of a soldier on the front, no. 8 under the publisher's information. One sheet of paper folded to make 8 pages, unopened. 3 3/4 x 6 inches. Chapbooks were an early form of popular literature, originating in the 16th century and fading out of use by the mid-19th century. They were cheaply printed booklets that "chapmen" would sell door to door or at fairs to the common people. This one contains a long poem based on the Battle of Otterbourne, a border skirmish between the English and British that occurred in 1388.. Book. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good.
