Bright,crisp and generally clean,publisher's original blind-stamped design+lettering to front bd of navy blue cloth,with some very minimal, partial oxidisation to gilt lettering on the spine/backstrip which is also slightly dulled.All corners minimally rubbed else otherwise,are fairly sharp and both head+foot of spine/backstrip also minimally bumped with reciprocal creasing - as usual/normal.Bright,clean pale green and white pictorial illustration and decorative border illustrated eps.Top edges clean but lightly toned,fore-edges brighter and also clean; contents particularly and spectacularly bright, tight,clean; solid and sound with just a few foxing spots to pages' bottom edge of first few pages (contents list/table,title separator page,and first four pages of first story),else no other foxing/spotting noted,no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - appears unread - apart from my own collation.UK,8vo HB,1st edn,iv -xiipp+15-574pp [paginated] includes author's 7pp introduction,a contents list/ table,33 short stories,plus [unpaginated] a colour frntis by Dudley Tennant,title page,a title separator page between last page of contents and first page of first story,and a b/w thumbnail printer+ publisher's device illustrated page at the rear. A collection of thirty-three tales of science fiction,fantasy and the supernatural,five of which appear together here,for the first time in in book form.28 tales had appeared earlier,in such volumes as 'THE STOLEN BACILLUS.','THE PLATTNER STORY.' and 'TALES OF SPACE AND TIME.'; the other five,appearing here for the first time in book form,and all date from the last century (then 1911). These five are; 'The Country of the Blind','A Vision of Judgment,','The Empire of the Ants.','The Beautiful Suit.' and 'The Door in the Wall.' The title story 'The Door in the Wall.',often cited and considered as one of Wells's greatest and best tales,appeared separately later in 1911,the text being accompanied by photographs by Alvin Langdon Coburn; it also appeared as an experimental film in 1956. A very nice copy of a fairly rare,if not uncommon title,and an important book by one of the masters of science fiction. A highly collected and prolific author/ writer of varied subjects as literature, histories and social commentary,but best remembered for his science fiction novels and short stories. An unusual item and a definitive collection of the author's own choice of short stories/tales,and will be an important and welcome addition to the WELLS canon. C. Dudley Tennant (active 1898-1918). Painter and illustrator in full colour, halftone and black and white.His work was typical of its period.Majority of his work appears in periodicals of the time which included amongst others: The Girl's Friend,The Graphic,The Idler,The Penny Pictorial Magazine, Punch and The Windsor Magazine.The sculptor Dudley Trevor Tennant (born. c.1900) was his son.
