[1976] Hardcover, black leather binding, frontispiece and illustrations throughout by Bernard Fuchs, satin moiré endpapers, 628 pages. Beautifully designed binding with stylized designs including a chess king and his surrounding pawns, symbolizing the world of Willie Stark. Designs, borders, and lettering in gilt. Four raised edges on spine. All edges in gilt. The acid-free book paper is a special paper stock by Franklin Library, made to archival standards. Condition: Free of bookplates, stickers, writing in text, and page tears. Several scratches to gilt on edges, top edge darken/rubbed from old settling dust over the years. Light age foxing to endpapers and blanks; former owners' names and date (1976) on backside of half title page. Pages are clear, clean, and readable. Illustrations are clear and vivid. Binding gilt is free of chips. Overall, condition is Very Good Plus. This is the 1946 novel about the rise and fall of a Louisiana demagogue, Huey Long. It's is a lively, timely story - yet swift-moving, and violent. Critics were lavish in their praise. "It moves like an express train, crackles with vitality, and vibrates with emotional intensity," said Yale Review. All the King's Men can be read as a Southern novel, as a political novel, or as a philosophical novel. Robert Penn Warren gives the reader quite a choice. This is a remarkable novel; it won the coveted Pulitzer Prize in 1947. Franklin Library (a division of Franklin Mint), published collectible books of high quality materials.
