Light tan dust jacket with green lettering and b/w illustration of deer & fawn forest scene on front. Forward by John Galsworthy. Translated from the German by Whittaker Chambers. Spine cocked, ends moderately bumped, boards bowed, bright gilding, charp corners, edges moderately faded with scattered small foxing spots, text bright, clean, except for a few scattered tiny spots of foxing on the first and last couple of leaves; previous bookseller's pencilled code and notation on verso of front free endpaper: "1928. First edition in English, scarce in original dust wrapper." Dust jacket wholly intact, spine faded but lettering thereon quite legible, chipping on hinge & flap bend ends, a few tiny closed tears, some very light smudging, but overall not unattractive, protected in a new Gaylord brand archival clear plastic cover (removable). Felix Salten was the pen name of Siegmund Salzmann, a Jewish Austrian writer born in Hungary whose books were banned by Adolf Hitler. John Galsworthy was the 1932 winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. In 1984, President Ronald Reagan posthumously awarded Whittaker Chambers the Presidential Medal of Freedom, for his contribution to "the century's epic struggle between freedom and totalitarianism.".
