Bright,crisp,overall and generally clean - a faint,narrow,longitudinal fluid stain along partial length of front board's lower edge - the only detraction from overall appearance,sharp-cornered, publisher's original plain undecorated lemon/pale yellow cloth boards/covers, bright,crisp,clean and without blemishes, spine/backstrip with black ink author+ title with a black-edged red panel at head of spine; publisher in black lettering to foot of same,rear board/cover,plain undecorated and clean.Negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners - no nicks,tears,splits or any fraying present and clean,plain white endpapers - front free endpaper with an off-set shadow.Top edges slightly discoloured through dust-soiling with a few blemishes, fore-edges brighter,cleaner and without foxing/spotting; contents bright,tight, clean,text body without foxing/ spotting, solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners,appears unread - apart from my own collation. UK,slim 16mo HB minus dw/dj1st edn,7-118pp [paginated] includes author's preface,plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages,a dedication - to Barbara Wall - 'Best and most long-suffering of scribes'.[Sister-in-law of Colin Hardie who typed-up several manuscripts for Lewis] - and a blank at rear of book. The story is of a visit to Heaven,in the form of a day trip by bus for those in Hell.There are several conversations which the author overhears,between Spirits and Ghosts.His guide to the heavenly regions in this dream is George MacDonald.The whole book is a comment on MacDonald's warning: 'No, there is no escape.There is no heaven with a little of hell in it - no plan to retain this or that of the devil in our hearts or our pockets.Out Satan must go every hair and feather'. Irish-born scholar,novelist,and author of about 40 books,many of them on Christian apologetics including 'The Screwtape Letters' and 'Mere Christianity' Born November 29,1898,Belfast then in Ireland [now in Northern Ireland] - died November 22,1963,Oxford,England.
