Browne ('Phiz') is well known for his collaboration with Charles Dickens, ten of whose novels he illustrated. However, he produced more - and better - work for Charles Lever, illustrating sixteen of Lever's novels and two books of his essays. 'The Knight of Gwynne' is a representative example of this work. Charles Lever (1806-72) was an Anglo-Irish novelist whose novels, according to 'Novels and Novelists: A Guide to the World of Fiction', edited by Martin Seymour-Smith, "are vivid and accurate portrayals of Irish life."
