John L. Stephens was the first Westerner to explore the ruins of the Mayan civilization, and thus the illustrations in the book are after the first drawings and sketches made on the spot by archaeologists.
Initially published in New York and London in 1841, “there were many reissues from the same plates, with only slight variations in the collations. London issues appeared in 1842 and 1843. Harper and Brothers, the New York publishers of the work, put out at least eleven issues of a “Twelfth Edition” between 1844 and 1871.” (Sabin II:91297)
