400 x 280 mm; magazine, disbound from volume LXXXVI, without wraps (as issued), and contained within a film fronted bag; pp. [523-546]; several woodcuts. Light browning; some soiling, fingering and rippling throughout; stitching loose; a few tears, the more significant of which are repaired with archival tape. The front page illustration features 'The Rebellion in the North-West Territory of Canada: Captain French (since killed) taking three Indian spies prisoners.' There are further pictures relating to the 1885 Northwest Rebellion, including a two-page spread captioned 'The Rebellion in the North-West Territory of Canada: Colonial troops marching over the ice of Nepigon Bay, Lake Superior.' Editorial comment in this issue reflects the jingoistic spirit of the times, and a racism that 'plays the man, rather than the ball': "It is satisfactory news that Louis Riel, the conceited and fanatical mongrel Canadian, who got up the Red River insurrection of 1870, and has again stirred up a rebellion among the half-breeds and some of the Indian tribes on the North Saskatchewan, is now a prisoner, and there are strong hopes of a speedy pacification."
