Large, black & white fold-out depicting a “Japanese Play Bill” facing pp. 118. Smaller black & white fold-out plate depicting the “Mountain of Fusi-Jama”. Includes a large folding Japanese play bill with elaborate scenes. Fold-out black & white plate facing pp 154 of the “Gods of Fusi-Jama”. 3 of these illustrations are lithographs by F. G. Netherclift. Some smaller black & white illustration in the text. Condition fragile. Cloth on the spine of the book browned. Cloth stained. Corners bumped. Edges scuffed. Small hole in the cloth on the rear board (1 cm). Cloth at the head and foot of spine chipped. Previous bookseller label on the rear paste-down. Hinges cracked. Some browning in the text, but mostly, the text-block is clean. Damage to the illustrations is as follows : Pp 14, 116, Edges of the plates are water-stained, however, the illustrations are unaffected. Pp 41, 144, 154, 166, 168, 170, 173, 280 the illustrations are water-damaged. Fold-out on pp 118 - there are some very small closed-tears in the edges of the fold-out. The author gives us a view of Japanese & Chinese society at the time. He gives a description of a journey from Yokohama, through Kawasaki, Shinagawa and into Yedo. Whilst in Yedo, the author worked for the British Consulate.
