Original publisher's red cloth binding with gilt lettering on front cover and spine. 5 1/2" x 7 3/4." 351 pages, complete. Former ownership inscription written in black ink on front free endpaper and dated to 1941: "A gift from R. Wells to The Claff Family, 1/29/41." Pages and covers are very clean and intact. Binding is tight. Top edge of front cover and spine appear to be a little bumped, but the book is otherwise a fine copy. George W. Cable (1844-1925) was a notable American author whose novels often had realistic depictions of Creole culture in his hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana. Cable also wrote nonfiction essays that discussed interracial families, supported racial equality, and decried Jim Crow laws. Lovers of Louisiana (To-Day) was Cable's last novel. The story is about the "forbidden" love between a beautiful woman named Rosalie Durel and a young lawyer named Philip Castleton. Both are from upper-class families, but the Durels are Creole and the Castletons are descended from a Confederate general. The two lovers find themselves caught between their families' ongoing disputes.. Book. Book Condition: Fine. Binding: Hardcover
