Circa 1840-1850. Original chapbook, once bound, with an illustration of a soldier on the front. One sheet of paper folded to make 24 pages, unopened. 3 3/4 x 6 inches. Chapbooks were an early form of popular literature, originating in the 16th century and fading out of use by the mid-19th century. They were cheaply printed booklets that "chapmen" would sell door to door or at fairs to the common people. This one contains a long poem about three young yeomen and how they made their fortune..
